National Archives Department

Post-Independence

After independence, the Archives Department continued to operate under the Archives Ordinance No. 71 of 1952 until the year 1999, when the National Archives Act was introduced. This new piece of legislation amended and modernized the law relating to the Archives. It still governs the present administration of the National Archives. Most provisions made under the Act were implemented during the period 2000 to 2006, namely the creation of a Records Centre, the Restoration Unit and the Oral History Unit. The E- Archives project was also initiated.
